The Hazards

Rubbish and debris

Broken bottles, cans and other debris can cause cuts and injuries

Precaution:

Look out for rubbish and debris that may be hidden in the water

Pollution

Risk:

Pollution such as sewage and chemicals from farms and fields can cause serious health problems

Precaution:

Look out for signs of pollution

Underwater plants

Risk:

Plants can make rocks slippery underfoot and can hide sharp debris in the water (glass bottles are common). Plants hidden in the water can also cause entanglement and make it difficult to get out

Precaution:

Be careful when paddling of hidden plants.

Precaution:

Be careful when moving in shallow water and do not jump in when you cannot see what is underneath
