The Hazards

Unstable bank
Risk:
The banks around quarries can erode and crumble, becoming very unstable
Precaution:
Stay away from the edge

Steep walls
Risk:
Vertical walls make getting out difficult, especially in an emergency
Precaution:
Keep away from the edge, and do not jump into quarries

Hidden objects
Risk:
You cannot see what is below the water in a quarry. Possible hazards include mining and industrial waste products (including chemicals and machinery), dumped rubbish, pollution, and sharp rocks
Precaution:
Do not jump into quarries

Cold water
Risk:
Most quarries contain very deep water which does not warm up in summer due to its depth. The effects from jumping into cold water can be fatal
Precaution:
Only swim in quarries that have been decommissioned and adapted for swimming, which should include the provision of safety cover. Be aware of the effects of cold water. Never jump in

Change in water depth
Risk:
The water depth in quarries is unpredictable and can change suddenly due to uneven ground under water and changes in rainfall.
Precaution:
Never jump into quarries

Trees on banks
Risk:
Tree roots may destabilise the quarry bank, making it more likely to collapse if you get near the edge. Tree roots are also a trip hazard
Precaution:
Stay away from the edge
